Here's How to Prepare for Your Immigration Physical
Immigration physicals are a required part of the immigration application process. While the exams aren’t complicated, it’s important to know what to expect and what you should do to prepare.

Nearly a million people became naturalized United States citizens last year, and every one of them had to pass an immigration physical. In fact, the immigration physical plays a big role in whether your citizenship application is approved or denied.

Our team at Nova Wellness Health offers immigration physicals to help patients navigate the immigration process smoothly and without delay. Here, learn what you can do to prepare for your physical and keep your immigration application process moving forward.

Why you need a physical

Most people applying for US citizenship know that if they have a criminal history, their application may be denied. But what you might not realize is that there are medical conditions that can cause denials or delays, too.

For US citizenship, your application can be denied if you:

  • Have a communicable disease
  • Have a history of drug abuse
  • Have a disorder that can cause violent behavior
  • Don’t have proper vaccination

The guidelines allow for the consideration of other medical issues, as well.

Following your exam, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reviews the information from your medical provider to determine if your application can proceed. Preparing for your exam helps ensure the exam contains all the information the USCIS needs to move your application to the next step.

Preparing for your exam

Before your visit, gather your medical records pertaining to vaccines and medical treatments, have a complete list of all the medications you’re taking, and write down any hospitalizations you had in the past.

Bring a copy of your official ID with you. Your ID needs to be government-issued (like a driver’s license or passport), and it must include your photo.

Your immigration physical begins with a thorough review of your medical history, including a review of your medical records.

If you can, bring a copy of Form I-693, the government document that details your health exam results. Once your exam is complete, your medical provider fills out the form and returns it to you once your test results are back.

Completeness and thoroughness count, so if you have any concerns about your health history or the impact it might have on your application, the exam is the ideal time to discuss them. Incomplete or inaccurate information can result in an immediate denial of your application.
